Chan Master Wuyi of Longshou in Zhangzhou, when first opening the hall and ascending the seat, remained silent for a long time and then addressed the assembly, saying: "Sthaviras, if you were people of superior capacity, you would have covered your ears long ago; those of medium and inferior sorts vie with one another, craning their necks to listen. Even so, this is still speaking only out of necessity. Sthaviras, on another day when someone everywhere asks about today's matter, how will you bring it up to them? If you can bring it up, you will wag your tongue and discourse with your tongue. If you cannot bring it up, as if having no three inches [of tongue], how will you bring it up?" A monk asked: "Please, Master, grant an indication of the peerless tradition of the school." The Master was silent for a long time. The monk said: "If so, then one immediately resolves doubting thoughts and tallies with the source of the mind. How should one discourse on the transcendental vehicle of the school?" The Master said: "You must wait until you awaken on your own before you will get it."
