Chan Master Daoquan, the twelfth generation of Guizong on Mount Lu, was a native of Anfu in Jizhou. His family name was Liu. From birth he abhorred meat and blood. While still a boy, he paid homage to Master Si of his home prefecture and received training. Hearing that Upādhyāya Huilun's teaching was spreading in Changsha—at that time the Ma clan had usurped Jingchu, which bordered Jiankang—the Master, at the age of twenty-five, joined with companions and braved danger, coming from afar to visit and seek him out. It happened that when the Ma clan was destroyed, Liu Yan had other [ambitions], and Wang Kui was sent to replace Liu Yan in presiding over the matter. Kui suspected that the Master was a spy from south of the Yangtze, so he ordered him seized and was about to drown him in the river. The Master remained serene and without fear. Kui marveled at this and questioned Upādhyāya Lun. Lun said: "These are all people who forget their bodies for the sake of the Dharma. Hearing the false praise of this old monk, he came only to resolve his doubts." Kui was pleased and released him, further according him courteous respect. The Master resided at Yanshou for ten years. When Upādhyāya Lun returned to quiescence, the Master returned to Mount Lu and stayed at Kaixian. At the beginning of the Qiande era, beneath Niushou Peak in the southeast of the mountain, he thatched grass to make a hut. In the fifth year of the Kaibao era, Commander Lin Renzhao of Hongzhou invited him to reside at Longji Cloister on Mount Jiufeng in Yunyang to elucidate the tenets of the school. The state conferred on him the title of Great Śramaṇa. A monk asked: "I have heard that you met Yanshou in person, Upādhyāya. Is that so?" The Master said: "Is the wheat before the mountain ripe yet?" The monk asked: "Is there still the Buddha-Dharma on Mount Jiufeng or not?" The Master said: "There is." The monk asked: "What is the Buddha-Dharma on Mount Jiufeng?" The Master said: "Among the stones on the mountain, the large are large, the small are small." Soon after, the Southern Tang fell, and the monks were routinely subjected to examinations on the scriptures. The Master's disciples all practiced Chan meditation. He then composed a verse and presented it to the prefect:
