Upādhyāya Baohua of Lianzhou. The Master ascended the hall and instructed the assembly, saying: "Look at heaven, look at earth; inside the kingdom of Silla. Paying respects, inquiring after health; daily consuming ten thousand ounces of yellow gold. Although it is like this, it is still only a small part." He also said: "The worlds of the entire ten directions are a wooden arhat. Speak a phrase atop the banner pole!" He also said: "In heaven dragons fly and phoenixes run; in the mountains tigers roar and apes cry. Bring it to your nostrils and speak a phrase!" A monk asked: "What is the environment of Baohua?" The Master said: "Green water in front, blue mountains behind." The monk said: "I do not understand." The Master said: "The very last phrase." The Master asked a monk: "Where do you come from?" The monk said: "I come from Darong." The Master said: "How has Darong been lately?" The monk said: "Lately he mixed a jar of bean paste." The Master said: "Śrāmaṇera, bring a bowl of water for this monk to look at his reflection." There was a monk who asked Darong: "Heaven has bestowed the six-zhu garment to put on; how will you repay our emperor's benevolence afterwards?" Darong said: "Coming, I wore the three robes; returning, I put on the six-zhu garment." When the Master heard this, he said: "This old frozen snot! Making such remarks!" When Darong heard this, he sent someone with a message saying: "How is that like failing to sever ties of servitude?" The Master said: "It was only throwing a brick in hopes of drawing jade." The Master saw a monk passing below the steps of the Dharma hall. The Master knocked on the corded chair. The monk said: "If it is this, please do not bring it out." The Master, pleased, went down to the ground to question him, but the monk had nothing to say. The Master struck him. Sometimes the Master wore a secular cap and said to the assembly: "If you say I am a layperson, yet I wear a kāṣāya; if you say I am a monk, yet on my head I wear a cap." The assembly had no answer.
