24.81

襄州白馬智倫禪師。僧問。如何是佛。師曰。真金也須失色。問如何是和尚出身處。師曰。牛觝牆曰。學人不會意旨如何。師曰。已成八字。

Chan Master Zhilun of Baima in Xiangzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "Even pure gold must lose its luster." The monk asked, "What is the Master's place of emergence into the world?" The Master said, "An ox butts the wall." The monk said, "The student does not understand; what is the meaning?" The Master said, "It has already formed the character 'eight' (八)."
