24.90

石門山紹遠禪師（第四世住）僧問。師唱誰家曲宗風嗣阿誰。師曰。十方無異類揭覺鳳林前。問先師歸於雁塔。當仁一句請師垂示。師曰。脩羅掌內擎日月。夜叉足下踏泥龍問金龍不吐凡間霧。請師舉唱鳳凰機。師曰。白眉不展手長安路坦平。問如何是西來意。師曰。布袋盛烏龜。問如何是石門境。師曰。孤峯對鳳嶺。曰如何是境中人。師曰。巖中殘雪處處分輝。問如何是和尚家風。師曰。滴瀝非旨趣千山不露身。問如何是古佛心。師曰。白牛露地臥清谿。問生死之河如何過得。師曰。風吹荷葉浮萍草。問如何是三乘教外別傳一句。師曰。羊頭車子入長安。問生死浪前如何話道。師曰。毛袋橫身絕飲啄。青谿常臥太陽春。問如何是道。師曰。山深水冷。曰如何是道中人。師曰。金槌擊金鼓。問天陰日不出光輝何處去。師曰。鐵蛇橫大路通身黑似煙。

Chan Master Shaoyuan of Mount Shimen (the fourth generation resident). A monk asked, "Whose song does the Master sing? Whose house style does he inherit?" The Master said, "In the ten directions there are no different species; the awakened one is revealed before the Phoenix Grove." [The monk] asked, "The late master has returned to the Goose Pagoda. As for the one phrase of the responsible one, please, Master, grant instruction." The Master said, "Within the asura's palms are held the sun and moon; beneath the yakṣa's feet is trodden the mud dragon." [The monk] asked, "The golden dragon does not spit worldly mist; please, Master, bring forth and sing the phoenix's dynamic." The Master said, "The white eyebrows do not stretch out their hands; the road to Chang'an is level and even." [The monk] asked, "What is the meaning of the [Patriarch's] coming from the West?" The Master said, "A cloth bag containing a black tortoise." [The monk] asked, "What is the environment of Shimen?" The Master said, "A solitary peak faces the Phoenix Ridge." [The monk] asked, "Who is the person within the environment?" The Master said, "Residual snow in the crags distributes brightness everywhere." [The monk] asked, "What is the Upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "Dripping drops are not the principle; the thousand mountains do not expose their bodies." [The monk] asked, "What is the ancient Buddha's mind?" The Master said, "A white ox lying in the open ground by the clear brook." [The monk] asked, "How to cross the river of birth and death?" The Master said, "The wind blows lotus leaves and floating duckweed." [The monk] asked, "What is the phrase of the separate transmission outside the three vehicles' teachings?" The Master said, "A sheep-head cart enters Chang'an." [The monk] asked, "Before the waves of birth and death, how does one speak of the Way?" The Master said, "A hairy bag lies horizontally across the body, cutting off eating and drinking; constantly lying by the clear brook in the spring of the great sun." [The monk] asked, "What is the Way?" The Master said, "The mountains are deep, the water is cold." [The monk] asked, "Who is the person within the Way?" The Master said, "A gold mallet strikes a golden drum." [The monk] asked, "When the sky is overcast and the sun does not come out, where does the brightness go?" The Master said, "An iron snake lies across the great road, its whole body black as smoke."
