Chan Master Daoqi, residing as the eleventh generation at Mount Yunju in Hongzhou, was a native of Hongzhou. His surname was Jin. He paid reverence to Chan Master Mingzhao of Mount Baizhang and was ordained. He traveled everywhere through Chan assemblies, yet his mind of study did not cease. Later, meeting Chan Master Fadeng, faculties and conditions immediately tallied. When Fadeng resided at Shanglan Cloister, the Master had charge of the sūtra canon. One day, while standing in attendance, Fadeng said to the Master, "Canon master, I have a turning phrase on the meaning of coming from the West. How do you understand it?" The Master replied, "Neither east nor west." Fadeng said, "What connection is there?" [The Master] said, "Daoqi is just like this; I do not know what the upādhyāya's venerable meaning is." Fadeng said, "That house has its own sons and grandsons." The Master thereupon thoroughly penetrated the essential import. He first resided at Dongchan Cloister in Junzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "Who are you?" [The monk] asked, "In the forest of thorns there is no way out; please, Master, through skillful means clear a path for me." The Master said, "Where do you intend to go?" [The monk] said, "I almost failed to reach here." The Master said, "Idle words." [The monk] asked, "When one cannot avoid saṃsāra and does not seek liberation, how is it?" The Master said, "Have you ever asked Jianshan?" [The monk] said, "I do not understand; I beg the Master for skillful means." The Master said, "I spare you thirty blows with the staff." [The monk] asked, "What are the three jewels?" The Master said, "What jewel are you?" [The monk] said, "How is that?" The Master said, "Earth, wood, tiles, and gravel." Next, the Master resided at Shuanglin Cloister in Hongzhou, and later resided at Mount Yunju. Preaching the Dharma at the three places, his attached remarks, searches for the profound, and selections and alternatives for the ancients, collected together, circulated widely in various quarters; they are not fully recorded here. In the third year of the Zhidao era, the dingyou year, in the ninth month, he showed illness. On the eighth day at the hour of the monkey, he ordered the bell to be struck to gather the assembly. The karmadāna announced, "The assembly has gathered." The Master said, "This old monk has served as abbot at three places for over thirty years. Brothers from the ten directions came together to speak of the Way; the officers and department heads diligently assisted this old monk. Today, fire and wind press upon me, so I specifically meet with you all. Do you all see yet? If you see today, this is the final skillful means; where do you see? Do you see in the four great elements and five skandhas, or in the six sense faculties and twelve sense bases? If you see here, then it can be said that for these twenty years on Mount Yunju, the later students have had someone to rely on. After I depart, the assembly of the monastery is entrusted to Qigui to open the hall and assume the abbacy; in all matters, continue to practice diligently. Exert yourselves, each of you. Take care!" No sooner had the great assembly dispersed than the Master returned to his western chamber and announced his demise. His age was sixty-nine; his monastic age was forty-eight. Today his pagoda stands on this mountain.
