Chan Master Xiaorong, the fifth-generation abbot of Longce Temple in Hangzhou, was a native of Bailu in Wenzhou. His surname was Deng. In his youth, he left home at Ruilu Temple and received the precepts. Hearing of the flourishing teaching of the State Preceptor of Tiantai, he then entered the mountain to pay homage and receive the mind-dharma. First he dwelled at Jingfu Courtyard in Fuyang, Hangzhou, and later dwelled at Longce Temple. In both places, he gathered disciples and opened the Dharma. A monk asked, "Patriarch transmits to patriarch; I do not yet know whom the venerable monk transmits to." The master said, "Do you still recognize the patriarchs yet?" The monk Huiwen asked, "What is a genuine śramaṇa?" The master said, "You are Huiwen." A monk asked, "What is the great divine jewel of prajñā?" The master said, "The great divine jewel of prajñā divides its form into ten thousand koṭīs of bodies; / Dust by dust manifests its wondrous substance, land by land is entirely Vairocana." A monk asked, "How is daily activity?" The master said, "A single thought encompasses the sands of realms; / Daily activity penetrates all the ten thousand ways. / Serene, it is constantly extinguished in stillness; / Constantly turning one's own house style." One day the master sat upon the Platform of Wondrous Goodness to receive the great assembly for an informal gathering. A monk asked, "I do not ask about the transcendental matter; what is the exact meaning on the Platform of Wondrous Goodness?" The master said, "If you go to the various quarters, recount it clearly." The monk said, "If so, then the clouds have the posture of coming out of the mountains, and the water has no sound of plunging into the ravine." The master then scolded him. On the twenty-ninth day of the eighth month in the year gengyin, the first year of the Chunhua era, the master returned to silence at Jingtu Courtyard of Lingguang Temple in Xiuzhou. In advance, he notified his disciples to send letters taking leave of his fellow practitioners of the Way. He lived seventy-one years, with fifty-six years of monastic age.
