In the past, three monks on pilgrimage intended to visit the upādhyāya of Jingshan. They encountered an old woman who happened to be harvesting rice. One monk asked, "Which way is the road to Jingshan?" The old woman said, "Go straight ahead." The monk asked, "The water ahead is deep; can one cross?" She said, "Your feet will not get wet." The monk asked again, "How is it that the rice on the upper bank is so fine, while the rice on the lower bank is so frail?" She said, "The rice on the lower bank has all been eaten away by crabs." The monk said, "It is so fragrant!" She said, "There is no smell at all." The monk asked her again, "Where do you live?" She said, "Right here." The three monks then entered her shop. The old woman boiled a pot of tea, set three cups on a tray, and said to them, "The upādhyāya who possesses supernatural powers may drink tea." The three men could not reply, nor did they dare pour the tea. The old woman said, "Watch an old woman display her own supernatural powers." Thereupon, she picked up the cups, poured the tea, and walked off.
