Mysterious discourses and marvelous phrases transcend the three vehicles far away. They do not mingle with conditions, nor do they stand alone in isolation. Facing the dais and functioning in response, they are like the bright moon illuminating the sky. Turning their shadows and extinguishing mental mechanics, they resemble a bright pearl concealed in the ocean. Furthermore, although students have various capacities, the wondrous principle is inexhaustible: those who comprehend phenomena are few, while those who are deluded about the source are many. In the myriad phenomena, each and every thing is clear; or phenomena and principle are both cast aside, and names and words are entirely lost. Therefore, I earnestly point to the moon so that you will not mistake its direction. Not losing the needle that penetrates water, one can be entrusted with the treasure within the opened fist. I briefly write this preface to these subtle words to illustrate phenomena and principle. (The Shiyuan of Master Qing states: "The Ten Mysterious Discourses circulating in the monasteries all lacked a preface. When I traveled to Mount Lu in the past, I obtained its preface at the memorial hall of Tong'an. I record it now just as it is.")
