祖意如空不是空。靈機爭墮有無功。三賢固未明斯旨。十聖那能達此宗。透網金鱗猶滯水。回途石馬出沙籠。慇懃為說西來意。莫問西來及與東。

The patriarch's intention is like emptiness, yet is not empty; / How could the marvelous function fall into existence, non-existence, or effort? / The three wise stages certainly have not understood this purport; / How could the ten holy stages comprehend this school? / The golden-scaled fish that breaks through the net still lingers in the water; / Turning back on the path, the stone horse leaves the sandbar pen. / Earnestly, I explain for you the meaning of coming from the west: / Do not ask about coming from the west or from the east.
