Later the Great Master saw this verse and said, "Who wrote this? This person has not seen the nature either." Hearing the Master's words, the assembly paid no more attention to it. When night fell, he secretly sent someone to summon the postulant Huineng from the millhouse into his room, and told him: "The Buddhas appear in the world for the sake of one great matter, and guide beings according to their capacities, whether small or great. Thus there are teachings such as the ten stages, the three vehicles, and the sudden and gradual doctrines, serving as gates of instruction. Yet the unsurpassed, wondrous, subtle, secret, fully bright, and real treasury of the correct Dharma eye was entrusted to the foremost, the Venerable Mahākāśyapa, and handed down through twenty-eight generations until Bodhidharma arrived in this land and obtained Great Master Ke, continuing in succession down to me. Now I transmit to you the Dharma treasure and the robe that has been handed down. Protect them well and do not allow them to be cut off. Listen to my verse:
