30.36

聽說衲僧牧護。任運逍遙無住。一條百衲瓶盂。便是生涯調度。為求至理參尋。不憚寒暑辛苦。還曾四海周游。山水風雲滿肚。內除戒律精嚴。不學威儀行步。三乘笑我無能。我笑三乘謾做。智人權立階梯。大道本無迷悟。達者不假修治。不在能言能語。披麻目視雲霄。遮莫王侯不顧。道人本體如然。不是知佛去處。生也猶如著衫。死也還同脫袴。生也無喜無憂。八風豈能驚怖。外相猶似癡人。肚裏非常峭措。活計雖無一錢。敢與君王鬪富。愚人擺手憎嫌。智者點頭相許。那知傀儡牽抽歌舞盡由行主。一言為報諸人。打破畫瓶歸去。

Listen to the talk of the patchwork monk's herding and protecting: / according with conditions, carefree, without abiding. / A single hundred-patch robe, a bottle, and a bowl— / these are the provisions for a lifetime. / Seeking the supreme principle through inquiry, / not shrinking from the toil of cold and heat. / Once roaming throughout the four seas, / mountains, waters, wind, and clouds filled the belly. / Internally dispensing with strict adherence to precepts, / not studying dignified comportment in walking and stepping. / The three vehicles laugh at my lack of ability; / I laugh at the three vehicles laboring in vain. / The wise provisionally establish gradations; / the Great Way fundamentally has no delusion or awakening. / Those who have reached it do not rely on cultivation or repair; / it does not consist in being clever of tongue and speech. / Draped in hemp, eyes gazing toward the clouds, / completely ignoring princes and nobles. / The fundamental nature of a person of the Way is just thus; / this is not a place known to Buddhas. / Life is just like putting on a shirt; / death is like taking off trousers. / In life, no joy and no sorrow; / how could the eight winds cause fear? / The outer appearance is like a fool; / inside the belly, extraordinarily sharp and resolute. / Though having not a single coin for livelihood, / I dare to vie in wealth with rulers and kings. / Fools wave their hands in disgust and aversion; / the wise nod their heads in approval. / How could they know that the puppet's pulling and leaping, singing and dancing, / are entirely due to the puppeteer? / A single word to announce to all of you: / smash the painted bottle and go home!
