The ancient mirror is pure, bright, and dazzling; / Dazzling, it shines everywhere upon sands of the Gaṅgā. / Setting names and inscribing titles everywhere: / Except for me, who else could it be? / Past, future, and present / Buddhas are fine blemishes upon the mirror. / When blemishes and defilements are exhausted and no thing remains, / This is truly the lotus flower within the fire. / Lotus flowers in thousands and myriads of blossoms; / Every blossom sits upright as Śākyamuni. / Who says he entered extinction at Kuśīnagara? / Who says the reed sprouts pierced through his knees? / If you do not believe it, look within the mirror: / The sheep cart, the deer cart, and the ox cart. / People of the time do not know the ancient mirror; / They all say it is fundamentally pure. / Merely regarding purity is false; / It reflects forms and appearances that are not upright. / Whether round, short, or grown long, / If there is the finest hair, all are afflictions. / I urge you, sir, it is better to smash it to pieces: / When the mirror is gone and blemishes vanish, it can be bright and clear. / Then you will also see the closed mouth at Vaiśālī, / And also know that perfect penetration has little left over.
