The spiritual pearl of prajñā is wondrous and hard to fathom; / Within the ocean of Dharma-nature, it is personally recognized. / Concealed and manifest, it constantly roams amid the five aggregates; / Radiant within and without, of great spiritual power. / This pearl is neither large nor small; / Day and night its radiance shines everywhere. / When sought, there is no object and no trace; / Arising and sitting, it accompanies you, constantly distinct and clear. / The Yellow Emperor once roamed by the Red Water; / Contending to hear and contending to seek, neither succeeded. / Imageless, having no mind, obtained the pearl instead: / Being able to see and able to hear is false and deceptive. / My teacher provisionally pointed to the metaphor of the maṇi; / Countless pearl-divers drowned in the spring pool. / Scrambling to pick up rubble and tiles, they took them for treasure; / The wise man, at ease, attained it naturally. / The myriad phenomena appear within its light; / Essence and function are as such, turning and yet not turning. / Ten thousand operations are cleared away in the square inch of the heart; / In all moments of time, skillful means. / Burning the six thieves, scorching the host of Māras, / It can destroy the mountain of self and dry up the river of craving. / The Nāga maiden personally presented it to the Buddha on Vulture Peak; / How long did the impoverished child under his robe waste his time? / It is named nature, and it is named mind; / Neither nature nor mind, it transcends past and present. / When its whole essence is bright, brightness cannot reach it; / Provisionally inscribed as the 'Chant on Playing with the Pearl.'
