If you recognize the jewel within the robe, / You will naturally sober up from the drunken stupor of ignorance. / Though the hundred bones collapse and scatter, / One thing remains ever spiritually alive. / Knowing the objective realm is entirely non-substantial, / The spiritual pearl has no fixed form. / When awakened, it is the three bodies of the Buddha; / When deluded and doubtful, it is the ten thousand fascicles of sutras. / In the mind, it can be measured by the mind; / Passing the ears, it is hard for the ears to hear. / The Imageless preceded Heaven and Earth; / The mysterious spring emerges from the dark and indistinct. / Fundamentally hard, it is not forged; / Originally pure, it needs no clarification. / Encompassing and vast, it turns like the morning sun; / Translucent and delicate, it reflects the morning star. / Its auspicious light flows without extinguishing; / Its true qi arises upon being touched. / Reflecting clearly, Kōngtóng is serene; / Encompassing all, the Dharma realm is luminous. / Putting down the ordinary, its merit does not perish; / Transcending the noble, its fruition does not overflow. / The Nāga maiden personally offered it from her heart; / King Ajātaśatru presented it from his own mouth. / The one protecting the goose was instead spared his life; / Regarding the yellow sparrow, the intention was still light. / Understanding speech is not concerned with the tongue; / Being able to speak is not a matter of sound. / Free of boundaries, it fills the vast expanses; / Boundless, it equals the level void. / Expositions of teaching are not for the sake of speech; / Hearing a name, do not cling to the name. / Do not establish either of the two extremes; / There is no need to travel the middle way. / Seeing the moon, stop looking at the finger; / Returning home, cease asking about the route. / If you recognize the mind, the mind is Buddha; / What other Buddha could ever be accomplished?
