A fellow person of the Way for more than seventy years; / Together leaving the city walls behind, delighting in mountain dwelling. / Body like cold wood, mental sprouts severed; / Not speaking Chinese, setting aside Sanskrit scriptures. / Where mental aspirations are exhausted, though the body perishes, / This is the monk's style of a disciple of the Tathāgata. / Deep faith mutually revering the completion of the almsbowl stūpa— / (The Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: The body of the Tathāgata has for immeasurable asaṃkhyeya kalpas not received food or drink. For the sake of the śrāvakas, he preached that he first received the milk-gruel of the two cowherd maidens. Hence the Benxing jing says: When the Bodhisattva was about to go to the Bodhi tree, at that time a deva told the two daughters of the spirit king Shànshēng: 'One is named Nandā, meaning joy in Chinese; the second is named Balā, meaning prosperity. You may make the very first offering of food.' Thereupon the two maidens boiled milk-gruel. Various auspicious signs appeared over their cauldron, and so they filled an almsbowl and offered it. After the Bodhisattva ate it, he threw the bowl into the Nairañjanā River. Śakra, lord of the devas, gathered it up, returned to heaven, and built a stūpa to enshrine and make offerings to it; hence it is called the Almsbowl Stūpa. This is one of the four celestial stūpas. The four stūpas are: first, the Hair Stūpa; second, the Arrow Stūpa; third, the Almsbowl Stūpa; fourth, the Tooth Stūpa. Among humans there are also four stūpas: first, the stūpa of the Tathāgata's birthplace; second, the stūpa of the Tathāgata's site of enlightenment; third, the stūpa of the Tathāgata's turning the wheel of Dharma; fourth, the stūpa of the Tathāgata's place of nirvāṇa.) / Majestically placed in the palm of the green mountain. / Observing that inquiring into the Way is not in vain, / Casting off the physical form is exceedingly noble. / Never speaking of today's matters, / Burying the head in darkness, concealing the profound ease. / Leaving no traces, different from the human world, / The deep and wondrous spiritual radiance is amply bright.
