"From an early age, this sick fellow was stubborn and foolish, yet had the fortune to receive your favor and regard, to hear in advance the tenets of the Southern School, and for a long time to accompany you in wandering through the capital. In action and stillness, inquiring and consulting; in associating with each other, being spurred on and inspired, so that my heart-cleansing made progress and I was without shame before the wall—this truly came from sitting at your mat and under your bed. Furthermore, the late Great Master Ān always extended guidance. Since he extinguished his shadow in the Twin Groves and returned to the West with a single sandal, my inner mind was vast and drifting, knowing not where to rest. In subsequent years, afflicted with chronic illness, my spirit and thoughts were bewildered and dazed. When I had a brief respite and could once again discern directions, I was also visited in my thatched dwelling by the Great Being Duke Liàng of Yúnmén. Liàng's essential tenets ran along the very same track as Master Ān's; both had come from Guīzōng and Yúnjū at Mount Lú, and both were descendants of the Fǎyǎn lineage. Last year I served as temporary prefect of this commandery, where I happened to meet the Chan Senior of Guǎnghuì. In truth, he was the Dharma successor of Niàn of Nányuàn; Niàn succeeded Fēngxué; Fēngxué succeeded the former Nányuàn; Nányuàn succeeded Xīnghuà; Xīnghuà succeeded Línjì; Línjì succeeded Huángbò; Huángbò succeeded the former Bǎizhàng Hǎi; Hǎi succeeded Mǎzǔ; Mǎzǔ came from Upādhyāya Ràng; and Ràng was the eldest direct successor of Cáoqī. In my study, official duties were simple and I had much leisure after meals. Sometimes I invited him to come while remaining seated; sometimes I ordered my carriage to follow him. Inquiring and tapping without fixed method, my ignorance and stagnation were suddenly resolved. After half a year, I was free and open without doubt, as if suddenly remembering what had been forgotten, as if suddenly waking from sleep. The things that had obstructed my chest throughout my life fell away with a clatter; matters unclear through accumulated kalpas appeared brightly before me. Surely my discernment was clearly divided, and my responses and interactions were without hindrance. Reflecting again, the ancient worthies mostly engaged in pilgrimages: as when Xuěfēng ascended Mount Dòng nine times and Mount Tóuzi three times, ultimately succeeding Déshān; Línjì attained the Dharma under Dàyú and ended up succeeding Huángbò; Yúnyán received much instruction and guidance from Dàowú, yet became the son of Yàoshān; Dānxiá personally received confirmation from Mǎzǔ, yet became the descendant of Shítóu. In antiquity there were many such cases; in principle there is no fault. The affinity by which this sick fellow now succeeds the lineage in truth belongs to Guǎnghuì, but the origin of my uplifting and stimulation truly came from Áofēng. What rejoicing, what rejoicing!"
