4.26

宣州安國寺玄挺禪師者。不知何許人也。甞一日有長安講華嚴經僧來。問五祖云。真性緣起其義云何。祖默然。時師侍立次乃謂曰。大德。正興一念問時。是真性中緣起。其僧言下大悟。又或問南宗自何而立。師曰。心宗非南北。

Chan Master Xuanting of Anguo Monastery in Xuanzhou: it is not known where he was from. Once, a monk lecturing on the Avataṃsaka Sūtra from Chang’an came and asked the Fifth Patriarch, “What is the meaning of the dependent origination of the true nature?” The Patriarch remained silent. At that time, the master was standing in attendance, and he said to the monk, “Virtuous One, the very moment when the single thought of your question arises is the dependent origination within the true nature.” The monk had a great awakening at these words. Someone also asked, “From what is the Southern School established?” The master said, “The mind school is neither southern nor northern.”
