Chan Master Weize of Buddha Cave Rock on Mount Tiantai was a native of the capital district (Jingzhao), surnamed Zhangsun. Initially he visited Chan Master Zhong of Niutou and had a great awakening to the profound meaning. Later he lived in seclusion at the West Rock of the Tiantai Waterfall. During the Yuanhe era of the Tang, his Dharma assembly gradually flourished, and he began to name the rock Buddha Cave. One day he instructed the assembly, saying, "Heaven and earth have no things; I have no things. Yet they have never been without things. This being so, the sage is like a shadow, and a hundred years are like a dream: what is birth and death? The perfected person, by means of this solitary illumination, can be the master of the myriad things. I know this; do you know it?" A monk asked, "What is the arrow of Nārāyaṇa?" The Master said, "It has hit the mark." Suddenly one day he told his disciples, "You should exert yourselves; what need have I to speak?" Two nights later, he sat peacefully and manifested extinction. His age was eighty, and his monastic age was fifty-eight.
