Chan Master Lingtao of Caoxi was a native of Jizhou surnamed Zhang. He relied on the Sixth Patriarch to leave home and never left his side. When the Patriarch entered quiescence, he then became the master of the robe and the stūpa. In the fourth year of the Kaiyuan era of the Tang, Xuanzong heard of his virtuous reputation and issued a decree summoning him to the palace. The Master declined due to illness and did not rise. In the first year of the Shangyuan era, Suzong sent an emissary to retrieve the robe of Dharma transmission to bring it into the inner palace for veneration, and further decreed that the Master accompany the robe to court. The Master also declined due to illness. He died at his native mountain at the age of ninety-five. An imperial decree bestowed the posthumous title 'Chan Master Daxiao.'
