Chan Master Taiyu of Mount Furong in Piling was a native of Jinling. His family name was Fan. At the age of twelve, he paid respects to Chan Master Zhong, the sixth generation of Mount Niutou, and had his head shaved. At twenty-three, he received full ordination at Anguo Monastery in the capital. Later, he met Daji and was secretly transmitted the ancestral intention. In the thirteenth year of the Yuanhe era of the Tang, he stayed at Mount Furong in Yixing, Piling. One day, while serving food to Upāsaka Pang, as the upāsaka was receiving the food, the Master said, "Giving rise to mind when receiving alms was long ago rebuked by Jingming. Casting aside this single mechanism, does the upāsaka still accept it?" The upāsaka said, "Back then, was Subhūti not an expert?" The Master said, "That has nothing to do with another's business." The upāsaka said, "The food reached my lips, only to be snatched away by someone else!" The Master then set down the food. The upāsaka said, "Not worth a single phrase." The upāsaka further asked the Master, "Where Master Ma truly worked to help people—did he pass that on to my master?" The Master said, "I have not yet seen him; how could I know where he truly worked?" The upāsaka said, "Just this seeing and knowing also cannot be found." The Master said, "The upāsaka should not speak only from one side." The upāsaka said, "If I speak only from one side, the Master again loses the principle; if I speak from two sides or three sides, can the Master still open his mouth?" The Master said, "Directly being unable to open one's mouth—this may indeed be called real." The upāsaka clapped his hands and went out. During the Baoli era, he returned to Qiyun and entered extinction. His age was eighty; his monastic age was fifty-eight. In the second year of the Dahe era, he was posthumously granted the title Chan Master Dabao ("Great Treasure") and his stūpa was named Lengqie ("Laṅkā").
