池州魯祖山寶雲禪師。問如何是諸佛師。師云。頭上有寶冠者不是。僧云。如何即是。師云。頭上無寶冠。洞山來參禮拜後侍立少頃而出。却再入來。師云。只恁麼只恁麼所以如此。洞山云。大有人不肯。師云。作麼取汝口辨。洞山乃侍奉數月。僧問。如何是言不言。師云。汝口在什麼處。僧云。無口。師云。將什麼喫飯。僧無對（洞山代云。他不飢喫什麼飯）師尋常見僧來便面壁。南泉聞云。我尋常向僧道。向佛未出世時會取。尚不得一箇半箇。他恁麼地驢年去（玄覺云。為復唱和語不肯語。保福問長慶。只如魯祖節文在什麼處被南泉恁麼道。長慶云。退己讓於人。萬中無一箇。羅山云。陳老師當時若見。背上與五火抄。何故如此。為伊解放不解收。玄沙云。我當時若見也與五火抄。雲居錫云。羅山玄沙總恁麼道。為復一般別有道理若擇得出。許上坐佛法有去處。玄覺云。且道。玄沙五火抄。打伊著不著）。

Chan Master Baoyun of Mount Luzu in Chizhou. [A monk] asked: 'Who is the teacher of all Buddhas?' The Master said: 'The one with a jeweled crown on his head is not.' The monk said: 'Who is it, then?' The Master said: 'He has no jeweled crown on his head.' Dongshan came to interview him; after bowing, he stood in attendance for a short while and went out, but then came in again. The Master said: 'Just so, just so; this is why it is like this.' Dongshan said: 'There are plenty of people who do not agree.' The Master said: 'Why should I take your mouth's eloquence?' Dongshan then served in attendance for several months. A monk asked: 'What is speaking without speaking?' The Master said: 'Where is your mouth?' The monk said: 'I have no mouth.' The Master said: 'With what do you eat rice?' The monk had no reply. (Dongshan substituted: 'He is not hungry; what rice does he eat?') Whenever the Master usually saw a monk coming, he would face the wall. Nanquan heard of this and said: 'I usually tell monks to comprehend it before the Buddha came into the world, yet I cannot even find half a person [who understands]. If he goes on like that, [he will have to wait until] the year of the donkey!' (Xuanjue said: 'Is this words of singing along together, or words of disagreement?' Baofu asked Changqing: 'Just where was Luzu's articulation that drew Nanquan's words?' Changqing said: 'Stepping back oneself and deferring to others—not one in ten thousand can do it.' Luoshan said: 'If Old Teacher Chen had seen it at that time, he would have given him five hits with the fire poker across his back. Why so? Because he knows how to release, but not how to gather in.' Xuansha said: 'If I had seen it then, I too would have given him five hits with the fire poker.' Yunju Xi said: 'Both Luoshan and Xuansha spoke like that; are they of the same view, or is there another principle? If you can discern it, I allow that you, sthavira, have a place to enter the Buddhadharma.' Xuanjue said: 'Tell me, did Xuansha's five hits with the fire poker strike him or not?')
