8.33

潭州秀谿和尚。一日谷山問。聲色純真如何是道。師云。亂道作麼。谷山却從東邊過西邊立。師云。若不恁麼即禍事也。谷山却過東邊。師乃下禪床方行兩步。被谷山捉住云。聲色純真事作麼。生師便掌谷山谷山云。十年後要箇人下茶也無在。師云要谷山老漢作麼。谷山呵呵大笑三聲。

Upādhyāya Xiuxi of Tanzhou: One day Gushan asked, "When sounds and forms are pure and true, what is the Way?" The master said, "Why talk nonsense?" Gushan then crossed from the east side to the west side and stood there. The master said, "If not like this, there would be calamity!" Gushan crossed back to the east side. The master then stepped down from the meditation bench and had walked only two steps when Gushan seized him and said, "What about the matter of sounds and forms being pure and true?" The master struck Gushan with his palm. Gushan said, "Ten years from now, you won't even find someone to serve you tea!" The master said, "What would I want with an old fellow like Gushan?" Gushan laughed aloud three times, "Ha, ha, ha!"
