8.36

汀州水塘和尚。師勘歸宗。甚麼處人。歸宗云。陳州人。師云。多少年紀歸宗云。二十二。師云。闍梨未生時老僧去來。歸宗云。和尚幾時生。師豎起拂子。歸宗云。遮箇豈有生邪。師云。會得即無生。歸宗云。未會在師無語。

Upādhyāya Shuitang of Tingzhou: The master tested Guizong, saying, "Where are you from?" Guizong said, "From Chenzhou." The master said, "How old are you?" Guizong said, "Twenty-two." The master said, "Before you were born, ācārya, this old monk was already coming and going." Guizong said, "When was the Master born?" The master held up his whisk. Guizong said, "Can this one have birth?" The master said, "If you understand it, there is no birth." Guizong said, "Not yet!" The master was silent.
