8.39

京兆草堂和尚。自罷參大寂。遊至海昌。海昌和尚問。什麼處來。師云。道場來。昌云遮裏什麼處。師云。賊不打貧人家。問未有一法時。此身在什麼處。師乃作一圓相於中書身字。

The upādhyāya of Caotang in the capital region, after ceasing to study under Daji, traveled to Haichang. The upādhyāya of Haichang asked, "Where have you come from?" The Master said, "From the place of practice (bodhimaṇḍa)." Chang said, "What place is this here?" The Master said, "Thieves do not rob the house of a pauper." A monk asked, "Before a single phenomenon existed, where was this body?" The Master then drew a circular figure and wrote the character 'body' inside it.
