8.41

濛谿和尚。僧問一念不生時如何。師良久。僧便禮拜。師云。汝且作麼生會。僧云。某甲終不無慚愧。師云。汝却信得及。問本分事如何體悉。師云。爾何不問。僧云。請師答話。師云。爾却問得好。其僧大笑而出。師云。只有遮師僧靈利。有僧從外來。師便喝。僧云。好箇來由。師云。猶要棒在。僧云。珍重。便出。師云。得能自在。

The upādhyāya of Mengxi: A monk asked, "How is it when not a single thought arises?" The Master remained silent for a good while. The monk then bowed. The Master said, "How do you understand this?" The monk said, "I am by no means without shame." The Master said, "Yet you have attained trust in it." A monk asked, "How does one embody and comprehend the fundamental matter?" The Master said, "Why don't you ask?" The monk said, "Please answer, Master." The Master said, "You have asked well." The monk laughed loudly and went out. The Master said, "Only this monk is sharp." A monk came from outside, and the Master immediately shouted. The monk said, "What a fine reason for coming!" The Master said, "You still need the staff." The monk said, "Take care," and went out. The Master said, "He has attained sovereign ease."
