Chan Master Lingxun of Mount Furong in Fuzhou first visited Guizong and asked, “What is the Buddha?” Guizong said, “If I tell you, will you believe?” The Master said, “The Upādhyāya speaks sincere and truthful words; how could I dare not believe?” Guizong said, “It is just you yourself!” The Master said, “How should I preserve and maintain it?” Guizong said, “When a single cataract is in the eye, space-flowers fall in confusion.” (Fayan said, “If Guizong did not have these last words, what Guizong would there be?”) The Master took his leave of Guizong. Guizong asked, “Where are you going?” The Master said, “Returning to the ranges.” Guizong said, “You have been here for many years. Pack your belongings and come back, and I will explain the Buddha-Dharma once for you.” The Master finished packing and went up to the hall. Guizong said, “Come closer.” The Master stepped forward. Guizong said, “The weather is cold; take good care on the road.” Hearing this single word, the Master instantly forgot his former understanding. Later, when he passed into silence, he was granted the posthumous title Great Master Hongzhao. His stūpa was named Circular Figure.
