Great Master Hiri of the Guohuan Chongfu Monastery in Putian County, Quanzhou, was a native of Houguan County in Fuzhou. His family name was Huang. When he was born there were wondrous signs. When he grew up, his name was Wenju, and he served as a county jailer. He would often abandon his duties to go to the places of Upādhyāya Lingguan of Shenguang and Chan Master Da'an of the Western Cloister, and the officials could not stop him. Later, he visited Chan Master Tankong of the Wansui Stūpa to have his hair shaved. He did not wear the kāṣāya and did not receive the complete precepts; he wore only a short garment made of multi-coloured cloth. He went again to the place of Upādhyāya Guan. Guan said, "I am not your master. Go pay reverence to the Western Cloister." The Master held a small green bamboo staff and entered the Dharma hall of the Western Cloister. An saw him from afar, laughed, and said, "Enter the Nirvāṇa Hall." The Master agreed, swung his bamboo staff, and entered. At that time about five hundred monks were infected with an epidemic. The Master pointed with his staff at each of them in succession, and each got up as soon as they were pointed at. The King of Min treated him with great reverence and built the Guohuan Chan Cloister for him to reside in. Thereafter, there were quite a few wondrous traces. He showed his demise during the Qianning era of the Tang.
