Chan Master Yuanming of the Wenshu Cloister in Guangzhou was a native of Fuzhou. His family name was Chen. Originally he studied under Dahui and attained the principle; later he visited Xuefeng to request instruction, and the Dharma was of no different flavour. He also once travelled to Mount Wutai, where he beheld the manifestation of Mañjuśrī. He then established a monastery in accordance with the locality, using "Mañjuśrī" as its name plaque. During the Kaibao era, the former Commissioner of Military Affairs Li Chongju inspected the south. Entering the Master's cloister, he saw an image of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva and asked a monk, "Why does Kṣitigarbha stretch out his hand?" The monk said, "The jewel in his hand was stolen by a thief." Li then asked the Master, "Since he is Kṣitigarbha, why was he robbed?" The Master said, "Today I have seized [the culprit]." Li then thanked him. He showed his demise in the first year of the Chunhua era, at the age of one hundred and thirty-six.
