"In the seventh year of Xiantong I first investigated the Dao;
Everywhere I encountered words, yet did not recognize words.
Inside my mind the lump of foolishness was like a woven basket;
For three springs I was unhappy, resting by the forest springs.
Suddenly I met the Dharma King sitting on a felt rug,
And immediately presented my doubts and sincerity before the Master.
From the felt rug the Master arose like a nāga,
Bared his shoulder, and struck a fist right against my chest.
Startled, the lump of foolishness scattered, falling away in alarm;
Raising my head, I saw the sun for the first time round.
From this point on, stumbling and tottering,
Straight through to the present I am always cheerful and joyful.
I only hear that inside my belly is stuffed full and distended,
No longer going east or west to hold the alms bowl."
