The nun Liaoran of Mount Moshan in Yunzhou. When Upādhyāya Xian of Guanxi was traveling on pilgrimage, upon arriving at the mountain he first said, "If it accords, I will stay; otherwise, I will overturn the meditation seat." He then entered the hall.
Liaoran sent an attendant to ask, "Did the sthavira come to tour the mountain, or did you come for the Buddhadharma?"
Xian said, "I came for the Buddhadharma."
Liaoran then ascended the seat. Xian stepped forward for an interview.
Liaoran asked, "Where did the sthavira depart from today?"
Xian said, "I departed from the crossroads."
Liaoran said, "Why didn't you cover it over?"
Xian had no reply. (Heshan spoke in his place: "How could one have reached here?") Only then did he make prostrations, and asked, "What is Moshan (Summit Mountain)?"
Liaoran said, "It does not expose its peak."
Xian said, "Who is the master of Moshan?"
Liaoran said, "It is neither male nor female form."
Xian then shouted and said, "Why don't you transform yourself?"
Liaoran said, "It is not a spirit and not a ghost; what would it transform into?"
Xian thereupon took this to heart and served as the head gardener for three years.
A monk came for an interview. Liaoran said, "How excessively ragged!"
The monk said, "Even though it is like this, I am nonetheless a lion's whelp."
Liaoran said, "Since you are a lion's whelp, why were you ridden by Mañjuśrī?"
The monk had no reply.
A monk asked, "What is the ancient Buddha's mind?"
Liaoran said, "The world collapses and is destroyed."
The monk said, "Why does the world collapse and be destroyed?"
Liaoran said, "How could there be no self of mine?"
