Upādhyāya Wansui of Zhenzhou. A monk asked, "When the great assembly ascends the hall, what matter should properly be discussed?" The Master said, "'Introductory Chapter, First.'" The monk asked, "What is the ultimate of the monastic?" The Master said, "Originally it is just the technique of blowing ash, yet on the shoal one takes off one's robe." The Master visited Baoshou. When they first met, he immediately spread his sitting cloth. Baoshou then got down from the meditation bench. The Master then sat on that meditation bench. Baoshou rushed into the abbot's quarters. After a short while, the administrator reported to the Master, "The Upādhyāya of the hall has already shut the gate. We invite the Upādhyāya to drink tea in the storehouse office." The Master then returned to his monastery. The next day Baoshou came to return the visit. The Master sat squatting on the meditation bench. Baoshou spread his sitting cloth. The Master also got down from the meditation bench. Baoshou sat on the meditation bench in turn. The Master returned to the abbot's quarters and closed the gate. Baoshou went into the attendants' quarters, took some ash, drew three lines enclosing the front of the abbot's quarters, and withdrew.
