Upādhyāya Licun of Xiangzhou was boiling tea. A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Ancestral Master's coming from the West?" The Master held up the tea spoon. The monk said, "Could it be just this, and that suffices?" The Master threw it into the fire. A monk asked, "What is observing the sound and attaining liberation?" The Master used fire tongs to strike the end of a piece of firewood and asked, "Do you hear it?" The monk said, "I hear it." The Master said, "Who is not liberated?"
