Upādhyāya Shilou of Fenzhou.
The Master ascended the hall. A monk came forward and asked, saying, “Not yet knowing one's original birth, I beg the master for expedient guidance.”
[The Master] said, “Shilou has no ears.”
The monk said, “This one knows his own fault.”
The Master said, “Does this old monk also have a transgression?”
The monk said, “Where is the Upādhyāya’s transgression?”
[The Master] said, “The transgression is in the place of your fault.”
The monk made prostrations; the Master thereupon struck him.
The Master asked a monk, “Where did you set out from?”
The monk said, “The Han state.”
The Master said, “Does the Son of Heaven of the Han state still revere the Buddha-Dharma?”
The monk said, “Woe! Woe! Fortunately, you asked this one; had you asked another person, calamity would have arisen.”
The Master said, “What are you doing?”
The monk said, “People are not even seen; what Buddha-Dharma is there to revere?”
The Master said, “How many summers have elapsed since the ācārya took the precepts?”
The monk said, “Thirty summers.”
The Master said, “Splendidly you ‘do not see anyone’!” and straightaway struck him.
