Chan Master Zhaoti Huilang of Tanzhou was a native of Qujiang in Shixing. His surname was Ouyang. At the age of thirteen, he had his head shaved under Chan Master Mo of Denglin Temple. At seventeen, he traveled to Nanyue. At twenty, he received full ordination at Yue Temple. He went to Mount Gonggong in Qianzhou to call on Daji. Daji asked, "What do you seek in coming here?" The Master said, "I seek the Buddha's knowledge and vision." Daji said, "The Buddha has no knowledge and vision. Knowledge and vision belong to the realm of Māra. You come from Nanyue, yet it seems you have not seen the essential mind of Caoxi at Shitou. You should go back." Receiving his instruction, the Master returned to Nanyue and went to Shitou. He asked, "What is the Buddha?" Shitou said, "You do not have Buddha-nature." The Master said, "What about wriggling and crawling sentient beings?" Shitou said, "Wriggling and crawling sentient beings, on the contrary, have Buddha-nature." The Master said, "Why is it that Huilang does not have it?" Shitou said, "Because you are not willing to take responsibility for it." At these words, the Master had faith and entered in. Later he resided at Zhaoti Temple in Liangduan, not stepping out of the gate for more than thirty years. Whenever students came to study, he would say to all of them, "Go, go! You have no Buddha-nature." His way of meeting faculties was generally like this. (At that time he was called Chan Master Dalang.)
