When Chan Master Guangren of Zaoshan was ascending the hall, the great assembly gathered. Coming out of the abbot's quarters and not yet having reached the Chan seat, the Master said to the assembly, "Is there anyone who does not fail the eyes of a lifetime of pilgrimage and can bring forth an inquiry?" Just as he ascended the hall and sat down, a monk came forward and bowed. The Master said, "Not failing me may be granted; but what about the great assembly?" He then returned to the abbot's quarters. The next day, another monk asked him to discern the intention of his previous words. The Master said, "At mealtime there is rice for you to eat; at night there is a bed for you to sleep in. Why do you press me constantly?" The monk bowed. The Master said, "Bitter, bitter!" The monk said, "Please, Master, point it out directly." The Master then lowered his feet and said, "Extending and retracting is entirely up to this old monk."
