Chan Master Sengyi of Mount Nanjishan in Hezhong. A monk asked, "Having the good fortune to draw near, I beg the Master for guidance." The master said, "If I were to guide you, I would be doing you an injustice." The monk said, "What should you teach this student to do that would be right?" The master said, "Above all, avoid right and wrong." He asked, "What is the breath of a patch-robed monk?" The master said, "Has it ever fumigated you?" He asked, "I do not ask about the identical; what is the distinct?" The master said, "If you want my head, you are completely free to chop it off and take it away." He asked, "Who is the master of the Dharma-body?" The master said, "It does not pass over." He further asked, "Who is the teacher of Vairocana?" The master said, "It does not transcend." The master first resided at Moshan; later the military governor of Min invited him to open the Dharma. He passed away at the Changqing Chan Yard. He was given the posthumous title Great Master Benjing, and his pagoda was called Wuchen (Dustless).
