Chan Master Huaiyou of Qixian in Mount Lushan was a native of Xianyou in Quanzhou. He received his training under Chan Master Chen of Mount Jiuzuo. Soon after, he travelled and studied, being admitted to Shishuang's room. Having received the profound purport, he resided on Mount Xie. His Way not yet widely known, he moved to reside at Qixian. Disciples gathered in crowds. A monk asked, "What is the phrase before the Five Old Men Peaks?" The master said, "For ten thousand ages and a thousand autumns." The monk said, "In that case, does it not end up severed of succession?" The master said, "Hesitating—to whom would you give it?" A monk asked, "Having come from afar, I ask the Master to inspire me." The master said, "I also do not rely on the time." He said, "I ask the Master to rely on the time." The master said, "I also do not change." He asked, "What is 'every dharma is without difference'?" The master said, "Adding frost on top of snow." The master later died on Mount Lushan. He was given the posthumous title Great Master Xuanwu, and his pagoda was called Chuandeng (Transmission of the Lamp).
