Zhiyuan of Mount Yunggai in Tanzhou was titled Great Master Yuanjing. While travelling on pilgrimage, he asked Yunju, "What about when Zhiyuan cannot do anything about it?" Yunju said, "It is only because of where your efforts, Ācārya, do not reach." The master withdrew without bowing. He then visited Shishuang and asked as before. Shishuang said, "Not only you, Ācārya; this old monk also cannot do anything about it." The master said, "Why can the Upādhyāya not do anything about it?" Shishuang said, "If this old monk could do something about it, I would have taken away your inability to do anything about it." (There was another dialogue; it appears in the chapter on Shishuang.) A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The master said, "The yellow-faced one is it." He said, "What is the Dharma?" The master said, "What is in the canon is it." He asked, "How was it before Dīpaṃkara appeared?" The master said, "It cannot be obscured." He asked, "Why does the snake swallow the snake charmer?" The master said, "The color throughout the body is not the same." He asked, "What is a patch-robed monk?" The master said, "Searching and inquiring, visiting the Way."
