Upādhyāya Shizhu of Fengxiang Prefecture. While traveling, he met Upādhyāya Dongshan (the third generation), who gave this turning phrase: "There are four kinds of people: one can speak beyond the buddhas and patriarchs but cannot walk a single step; one can walk beyond the patriarchs and buddhas but cannot say a single phrase; one can both speak and walk; one can neither speak nor walk. Which one is the person?" The Master stepped out from the assembly and replied, "The one who can speak beyond the patriarchs and buddhas but cannot walk is simply tongueless, not permitted to walk. The one who can walk beyond the patriarchs and buddhas but cannot say a single phrase is simply footless, not permitted to speak. The one who can both speak and walk is like a box and lid fitting together. As for the one who can neither speak nor walk, like severing life to seek living, this is a barren woman wearing a cangue and shackles." Dongshan said, "What about the ācārya yourself?" The Master said, "Within the all-pervading assembly, towering aloft, how could it be displayed?" Dongshan said, "Just as with Minggong Xiu on the sea, what about that?" The Master said, "Phantoms meeting each other, clapping hands and roaring with laughter."
