Upādhyāya Tong'an of Mount Fengqi in Jianchang, Hongzhou (First-generation resident). A monk asked, "What is the Upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "The golden rooster embraces its chick and returns to the empyrean; the jade hare conceives and enters the Purple Tenuity." The monk said, "If a guest suddenly arrives, with what will you entertain him?" The Master said, "Golden fruit is plucked by monkeys in the early morning; jade blossoms are borne in phoenixes' beaks after evening." He asked, "Why can one not catch anything though fishing all day in the pool?" The Master said, "The dark source does not conceal the jewel of the unproduced; do not cast your hook in vain toward the emerald pool." He asked, "What is it like when a single phrase of the clear faculty encounters no morning dew?" The Master said, "Beneath the sun's gate there are no stars or moon; before the Son of Heaven's hall there are no poor children." He asked, "What is Tong'an's place of turning around?" The Master said, "Throughout vast eons, the jade dew has never sunk; how could the workings of the sun be obstructed right before the eyes?" He asked, "How does one advance along a perilous and evil path?" The Master said, "The profound body penetrates the thousands of divergent roads; when the emerald sea is waveless, going is indeed difficult." He asked, "What is the matter beneath the patch-robe?" The Master said, "A single piece of the jade wheel exists through present and past; how could it be like an old fisherman dropping his hook at night?" He asked, "What is a person of great shamelessness?" The Master said, "The King of Emptiness does not sit in the Hall of the Unproduced; before Kāśyapa's hall, no lamp is lit."
