Chan Master Huigong of Ruilong Cloister in Tiantai was a native of Fuzhou surnamed Luo. His family had been literati for generations. At age seventeen, he was recommended as a jinshi and went with the tributary cohort to the capital. While visiting Fengri Temple on Mount Zhongnan, the master saw an image left behind of an ancestral master, whereupon he sought to leave home. At twenty-two he received the precepts. Travelling about, he visited Chan Master [Xuan]jian of Deshan. Deshan asked, "Do you understand?" Gong said, "What?" Deshan said, "Please let us see each other." Gong said, "Do you recognize [me]?" Deshan laughed loudly, and [Huigong] then entered his room. After Deshan's passing, [Huigong] went with his disciples to Ruilong Cloister in Tiantai and extensively opened the Dharma seat. In the third year of the Tianfu reign of the Tang (a guihai year, 903 CE), on the second day of the twelfth month at the hour of the horse, he ordered the assembly to sound the bell. He looked left and right and said, "I am going." Having spoken, he sat cross-legged and passed away. His age was eighty-four, his monastic age sixty-two. His disciples erected a pagoda.
