17.65

Upādhyāya Tiantai of Yingzhou (who earlier resided at Tiantai). [A monk] asked, "Where did the ancient Buddhas go?" The Master said, "The first mansion in the center is lofty; year after year it produces spiritual sprouts." [The monk] asked, "How was it before the ancient mirror was polished?" The Master said, "No labor was applied." The monk said, "How is it after being polished?" The Master said, "It does not shine or illuminate."
