Master of Comprehending Truth, Huadu of Xixing in Hangzhou, was named Shiyu and was a native of Quanzhou. Having attained Xuefeng's mind-seal, his teaching activities flourished between Hangzhou and Yuezhou. Later he resided at Huadu Monastery in the town of Xixing, where his Dharma assembly flourished greatly. A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the [Patriarch's] coming from the West?" The Master raised his whisk. The monk said, "The student does not understand." The Master said, "Go drink tea." [A monk] asked, "What is the seamless stūpa?" The Master said, "Five feet, six feet." [A monk] asked, "What is a single dust mote?" The Master said, "A fraction of a kṣaṇa of the nine lifetimes." [The monk] said, "How can it contain the dharmadhātu?" The Master said, "Where is the dharmadhātu?" [A monk] asked, "The ravines and valleys differ from each other; how does the Master illuminate their oneness?" The Master said, "Why are you panting?" [A monk] asked, "The student is a beginner. I beg the Upādhyāya to indicate the road of entry." The Master said, "In what place do you blame Huadu?" [A monk] asked, "What is the mani jewel that complies with colors?" The Master said, "Blue, yellow, red, white." [The monk] said, "What is the mani jewel that does not comply with colors?" The Master said, "Blue, yellow, red, white." [A monk] asked, "What is the meaning of the [Patriarch's] coming from the West?" The Master said, "Is it coming from the east or coming from the west?" [A monk] asked, "How was it before Niutou saw the Fourth Patriarch?" The Master said, "Birds and beasts were both deluded." [The monk] said, "How was it after seeing him?" The Master said, "The mountains are deep and the waters are cold." [A monk] asked, "What matter did Vimalakīrti and Mañjuśrī discuss face to face?" The Master said, "There is only the water of Mirror Lake before the gate; / The clear breeze does not alter the waves of former times." From then on, the Master's reputation was heard far and wide. King Qian revered his virtue and the Way, and memorialized the throne to grant him a purple robe and a master's title.
