Chan Master Daopu of Mount Shuilong in Quanzhou, known by the title Great Master Hongjiao, was a native of Futang in Fuzhou surnamed Zheng. He was tonsured at Baolin Monastery. Having received the mind-seal from Xuefeng, he resided at Wufeng. Ascending the hall, he said, “Do not say there is no reception in the empty mountain,” and thereupon returned to the abbot's quarters.

A monk asked, “All words and phrases do not exceed the crown of the great chiliocosm. I do not know, what is the matter beyond the crown?”
The Master said, “All words and phrases are not the crown of the great chiliocosm.”
The monk asked, “What is the crown of the great chiliocosm?”
The Master said, “The heaven of Maheśvara is still a small chiliocosm realm.”

[A monk] asked, “As a beginner and later student who has newly entered the monastery, I beg the master for instruction within the gate of skillful means.”
The Master knocked on the doorframe.
The monk asked, “Is there still a transcendental matter?”
The Master said, “There is.”
The monk asked, “What is the transcendental matter?”
The Master knocked on the doorframe again.
