Having transmitted the Dharma, the Venerable One grasped a tree with his right hand and passed away. The great assembly deliberated, saying: 'The Venerable One entered extinction under the tree; does he bestow shade upon later descendants? We shall take his whole body and erect a stūpa on a high plateau.' The assembly's strength could not lift it. So they erected a stūpa right beneath the tree. This corresponded to the thirteenth year, dingwei, of Emperor Zhao of the Former Han.
