Chan Master Daoyan of Mount Dongshan in Yunzhou (the fourth generation to reside there, known at the time as Upādhyāya Hutou) was once asked by Upādhyāya Caoshan, who posed this saying: "There is a person who leaps and casts his body down from a cliff of ten thousand fathoms; what kind of person is this?" No one in the assembly could answer. The Master came forward and replied: "He does not remain." Caoshan said: "He does not remain where?" He said: "Only then can he avoid being smashed to pieces." Caoshan deeply approved him. A monk asked: "Please, Upādhyāya, secretly bestow the true mind." The Master said: "Why do you treat this place as though there were no one here?"
