Chan Master Wei of Tong'an Cloister on Mount Fengqi in Hongzhou. A monk asked, "How was it before Niutou met the Fourth Patriarch?"
The Master said, "At the roadside spirit shrine, all who see it raise their fists."
[The monk] asked, "How was it after he met him?"
The Master said, "Inside the room there is no altar for the spirit; the whole household does not wear mourning."
[A monk] asked, "What are the Patriarch's meaning and the teachings' meaning?"
The Master said, "The Jade Hare has never known the meaning of dawn; / How could the Golden Crow be willing to shine in the night?"
[A monk] asked, "What is the single melody of Tong'an?"
The Master said, "The numinous zither does not draw upon human tunes; / How could one who understands music pass through Boya's gate?"
[The monk] said, "Who can know it?"
The Master said, "When the wooden horse neighs, listen from there; / When the stone man claps his hands, who hears it?"
[The monk] said, "How about one who understands music?"
The Master said, "One who understands music does not pass through the ears; how could those who have reached it hear alike?"
