Upādhyāya Zhongdu of Dengzhou. A monk asked, "When throughout the realm one does not encounter a master, who is the master within the boundaries?" The Master said, "The golden rooster constantly crows at dawn; people of the times do not realize it themselves." A monk asked, "What is the bright mirror in the dark?" The Master said, "The ten thousand functions cannot dim it." The monk asked, "I wonder what it illuminates?" The Master said, "What thing does it not illuminate?" A monk asked, "What is: 'On the ground of ultimate reality, not a single speck of dust is admitted; yet within the gate of Buddhist work, not a single dharma is abandoned'?" The Master said, "True constancy is unstained by dust; within the realm, the hundred rivers flow." A monk asked, "Please, Upādhyāya, answer apart from sound and form." The Master said, "The wooden man constantly converses; having nature, he cannot speak."
