Chan Master Yicong of Luoshan in Fuzhou. The Master went up to the hall, and the assembly stood for a long time. The Master said, 'If there were a place of transmission, Luoshan would lack eyes; if there were no place of transmission, one would labor without result. Thus Vimalakīrti once faced Mañjuśrī. Now tell me, do you understand or not?' A monk asked, 'What is the lion emerging from its cave?' The Master said, 'Where is not shattered?' The monk said, 'What sound does it make?' The Master said, 'The deaf do not hear.' [The monk] asked, 'Pointing with fingers to heaven and earth, [he proclaimed], "I alone am the honored one." Why was he instead reproached by an onlooker?' The Master said, 'It is said that the barbarian's beard is red.' The monk said, 'Just what special strength does that onlooker have?' The Master said, 'Seeing injustice on the road, he presses his sword.'
